AI website builders vs building with your own AI agent
There are two ways to get a website from AI: a builder that generates one inside its own editor, or your own AI agent building real pages. How they differ, and which suits you.

Search for "AI website builder" and you'll find two quite different things under the same name. Knowing which is which saves a lot of time.
The two kinds
AI website builders are website platforms with AI added. You answer a few questions, the builder generates a site from its own templates and blocks, and you then edit it in its editor. The AI's job is mostly the first draft.
Building with your own AI agent works the other way round. An agent on your computer, such as Claude Code or Codex, writes every page from your description, old website or design, and saves them to a hosting platform. You change things by asking the agent, not by dragging blocks around.
There's a third thing that also gets called an AI builder: AI app builders, which turn a prompt into a web app. They're excellent for prototypes and tools. They're less suited to a business website that needs a domain, email, enquiries and search set up and kept running.
How they compare
| AI website builder | Your own AI agent | |
|---|---|---|
| Where the look comes from | The builder's templates and blocks | Your design, or a direction you choose |
| How you change things | The builder's editor | Ask the agent in plain words |
| What the pages are | The builder's own format | Real HTML |
| Following a design exactly | Limited by what the blocks can do | Built as drawn |
| What you need | A browser | An AI agent, which usually needs a paid plan from its maker |
When a builder suits you
If you'd rather click than type, want everything in one browser tab, and are happy with a template-based look, a traditional builder with AI features is a reasonable choice. Its strength is the editor.

When your own agent suits you
- You have a design, or a clear idea of how you want to look, and don't want it squeezed into a template.
- You'd rather describe a change than learn an editor.
- You already pay for Claude or ChatGPT and want to use it.
- You're a designer building sites for clients and want them built as drawn, then signed off.
The catch with an agent has always been everything around the pages: hosting, domain, SSL, forms, email and search. That's the part Prooflive.ai handles. Your agent builds; Prooflive checks each page against Proofrails™, hosts it in London, and puts it live on your domain with a leads inbox and search set up.
Questions to ask any option
- Can I use my own domain, and is SSL included?
- Where do form enquiries go, and is spam filtered?
- Can I have email on my domain, and what does it cost?
- Who owns the site, and can I take it with me?
- What happens to the price after the first year?
Our comparison with Framer, Webflow and Wix answers these for a few well-known platforms.
