How to remove a background

  1. Drop in a photoAny JPG, PNG or WebP. The first time, the AI model downloads once (about 90 MB) and your browser keeps it for next time.
  2. Wait a few secondsIt finds the subject and works out every edge. With a recent graphics card it takes about a second; on the processor, about 15 seconds.
  3. Pick a backgroundKeep it transparent, or put the cut-out on a colour for product shots and profile pictures.
  4. DownloadA transparent PNG for websites and design files, WebP for a smaller file, or the black and white mask to refine in Photoshop or Figma.

Good to know

Private by design

Most background removers upload your photo to their server. This one doesn't: the AI model (ormbg, released under the Apache 2.0 licence) runs inside your browser using your own graphics card (WebGPU) or processor. That makes it safe for client work under NDA, unreleased products and photos of people.

Getting the cleanest cut-out

  • Use the largest original you have: the mask is made at your photo's full size.
  • A clear difference between the subject and the background helps most: a dark jacket on a dark wall is the hardest case.
  • Very fine detail, like stray hairs or a bicycle's spokes, may need a touch-up: download the mask and refine it in Photoshop or Figma.

Using cut-outs on a website

Transparent PNGs can be large. Once you're happy, run the PNG through the image compressor and save it as WebP, which keeps transparency at a fraction of the size.

Questions

Is this background remover free?

Yes, with no sign-up, no credits and no watermark, at your photo's full resolution.

Is my photo uploaded?

No. The AI runs in your browser on your own device. The only download is the model itself, the first time you use it.

Why is it slow the first time?

The first time, your browser downloads the AI model: about 90 MB, or 45 MB on computers without a graphics card it can use. It's kept in the browser's cache, so after that it starts straight away.

Which browsers does it work in?

Recent Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox. Where the browser can use your graphics card (WebGPU) a photo takes about a second; otherwise it runs on the processor in about 15 seconds.

Can I use the cut-outs commercially?

Yes. The model is released under the Apache 2.0 licence and the result is your own image, so you can use it for client work, products and ads.

Can it remove the background from a logo?

Yes, and for a simple logo on a white background it's very clean. If you have the logo as a vector file, export it with a transparent background instead: that's always sharper.
