How to make a QR code

  1. Choose what it opensA web address, Wi-Fi details, a contact card, an email, a call, a text or a WhatsApp chat.
  2. Fill in the detailsThe code updates as you type. Keep web addresses short: a shorter code has bigger dots and scans from further away.
  3. Make it yoursPick dot and corner styles, your brand colours and add a logo. Error correction goes up to Highest on its own so the logo doesn't stop it scanning.
  4. Test, then downloadScan it with two or three phones, then download SVG for print or PNG for the web and social.

Good to know

QR codes that scan first time

Phone cameras need contrast, a quiet margin and dots big enough to see. Dark dots on a light background always scan best; light on dark fails on some older phones. Keep the standard quiet zone (four dots of space) round the edge, especially on a busy background.

For print, a code should be at least 2 cm across for a business card or flyer held in the hand, and roughly a tenth of the scanning distance for posters: a code read from 2 metres should be about 20 cm wide.

SVG or PNG?

SVG is vector, so it stays sharp at any size: use it for anything printed, and send it to your printer as is. PNG is for screens, email and social posts; 1024 px is plenty for most uses.

Static codes don't expire

Codes made here are static: the web address or details are inside the code itself, so there's no account, no redirect and nothing that stops working when a free trial ends. To change where a printed code goes later, point it at a page on your own website and change the page instead.

Wi-Fi, contact cards and WhatsApp

A Wi-Fi code joins guests to your network without typing the password, perfect for cafes, salons and holiday lets. A contact card (vCard) saves your name, number, email and website to their phone in one tap. A WhatsApp code opens a chat with your number, with a first message ready to send.

Questions

Is this QR code generator really free?

Yes. There's no sign-up, no watermark and no limit, and the codes work for ever because they aren't routed through anyone's server.

Do the QR codes expire?

No. These are static codes: the address or details are stored in the code itself, so they keep working as long as the address does.

Can I put my logo in the middle of a QR code?

Yes. Add a logo and the dots behind it are cleared and error correction is set to the highest level, so up to 30% of the code can be covered and it still scans. Keep the logo small and test it on a few phones.

What size should a QR code be for print?

At least 2 cm across for something held in the hand, like a business card. For posters, make it about a tenth of the distance people will scan from.

Can I track how many people scan it?

Not with a static code. Point it at a page on your site with a tag on the address (for example ?src=flyer) and your site's visitor stats will show the scans.

Is anything I type sent to you?

No. The code is made in your browser and nothing you type or upload leaves your device.
