Good to know
Why image size matters
Images are usually the heaviest part of a web page, and page speed is part of how Google ranks pages (Core Web Vitals, particularly Largest Contentful Paint). A 4 MB photo straight off a phone can often be 300 KB as WebP without a visible difference.
WebP, AVIF, JPG or PNG?
- WebP: about 25 to 35% smaller than JPG at the same quality, keeps transparency, and every current browser shows it.
- AVIF: smaller again, especially for photos, but slower to make and only Chrome and Edge can save it from a web page today.
- JPG: for email and anywhere WebP isn't accepted.
- PNG: lossless, for screenshots and graphics with sharp text. Large photos as PNG are very heavy.
Good settings for a website
Photos: WebP at 75 to 85%, longest side 2560 px for full-width images and 1600 px for the rest. Logos and icons: SVG where you can. On Prooflive.ai, uploads are compressed and get WebP copies automatically, so this step is done for you.
Questions
Is the image compressor free?
Yes, with no sign-up and no limit on the number or size of files.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. They're compressed in your browser, so they never leave your device. That also makes it fast.
Does compressing reduce quality?
WebP, AVIF and JPG remove detail you're unlikely to notice. At 80% most people can't tell the difference; lower it to see where your own images start to show it. PNG is lossless.
Why can't I choose AVIF?
Your browser can't save AVIF from a web page. Chrome and Edge can; in Safari and Firefox, choose WebP.
Does it remove location and camera details?
Yes. Images are redrawn and saved fresh, so the EXIF data (camera, date and GPS location) isn't carried across.
Is WebP supported everywhere?
Every current browser shows WebP, including Safari since 2020. Some older email apps don't, so use JPG for email.
