The tags that make a good preview

  • og:title: the headline in the preview, up to about 60 characters.
  • og:description: one or two lines on why to click.
  • og:image: the picture, 1200 x 630 px (1.91:1), under 1 MB, with any text kept away from the edges.
  • og:url: the page's main address.
  • twitter:card: summary_large_image for the big picture on X.

Clearing a network's old preview

Networks keep a copy of a page's preview for days or weeks. After a fix, use Facebook's Sharing Debugger (Scrape Again) and LinkedIn's Post Inspector to make them read it again. WhatsApp and Slack update when the link is shared fresh.

Questions

Is the Open Graph checker free?

Yes, with no sign-up, within a fair number of checks an hour.

What size should an Open Graph image be?

1200 x 630 px, a 1.91:1 shape, saved as JPG, PNG or WebP under 1 MB. It works for Facebook, LinkedIn, X, WhatsApp and Slack.

Why is my old image still showing?

The network has a saved copy. Run the page through Facebook's Sharing Debugger or LinkedIn's Post Inspector to refresh it.

Why does it say the image couldn't be loaded?

The image address is broken, needs a sign-in, or is blocked to crawlers. Open the og:image address in a private window to check.

Does Open Graph help SEO?

Not as a ranking factor, but good previews get more clicks when people share your pages, and that brings visitors and links.

Can it check pages behind a login?

No. It reads pages the way the networks do, so only public pages can be checked.
