Claude Code for web development: what it can build
What Claude Code does well in web development, where it needs help, and how to get a finished, hosted website out of it rather than a folder of files.

Claude Code is Anthropic's AI coding agent, and it's well suited to web development: it reads your project, writes HTML, CSS and JavaScript, runs commands and checks its own work, from your terminal or the Code tab of the Claude desktop app. For a business website, pair it with a host it can publish to, so the pages it writes go live without copying files around.
Here's what Claude Code does well in web development, where it needs help, and how to get a finished site out of it rather than a folder of files.
What Claude Code is
Claude Code is the agent version of Claude. Rather than answering in a chat window, it works in a folder on your computer: it can read and write files, run commands, fetch web pages and call web addresses, and it asks before doing anything you haven't allowed. You describe what you want in plain English, and it does the work step by step, showing you as it goes.
Is Claude Code good for web development?
Yes, for most of it. Because Claude Code works with the files and commands on your computer rather than a chat window, it isn't tied to one way of building: it can write a plain HTML and CSS site, work in a framework project you already have, follow a design system, and run your project's own checks and build steps. It's at its best when it can see the real thing: your design, your old site, your existing code.
Where it's less suited is the part after the code: putting a business website live and keeping it running. That's covered below.
What Claude Code does well in web development
- Building from a design. Give it a design, a screenshot or a reference site and it builds the page to match, layout and type included.
- Rebuilding an old site. Point it at your current website and it reads every page, keeping your words, prices and details.
- Responsive layouts. It writes pages that work on a phone, a tablet and a laptop, and fixes the ones that don't.
- The fiddly parts. Forms, menus, accessibility fixes, page titles and descriptions, and small scripts.
- Changes in plain words. "Make the menu prices bigger" or "add a page for weddings" is enough.

Where it needs help
Claude Code writes the website. On its own it doesn't give you somewhere to put it, so you still need:
- Hosting and a domain, with SSL, so the site is live on your own address.
- Somewhere for enquiries to go, so form messages reach you rather than disappearing.
- Email on your domain, search set up, and a way back to earlier versions when a change goes wrong.
- Quality control. Left to itself, any AI can fall back on invented figures, made-up reviews and the stock AI look.
Claude Code and Prooflive.ai
Prooflive.ai is built to be the other half. You paste one build prompt into Claude Code; it reads the questions to ask you, the rules to build by and every endpoint, then saves each page to a private preview. Every save goes through our built-in quality control (Proofrails™), which sends back invented figures, fake reviews and the stock AI look before you see them. When it looks right, you go live on your own domain, with hosting in London, a leads inbox and, from Standard, a mailbox on your domain.
There's no plugin or MCP server to set up, and other agents work the same way. See connect your agent and how it works.
Tips for web development with Claude Code
- Start with a design or a real brief. Your business, your area, your prices and who you're for. The less it has to guess, the less generic the result.
- One change at a time. Ask, check, then ask for the next thing.
- Check on your phone. Most of your visitors will see it there first.
- Read what it publishes. You're responsible for what's on your site, so check every fact. See who owns an AI-built website.
Build yours with Prooflive.ai.
Paste one prompt into your AI agent with a few lines about your business, your old website or a design. Free to build and check; from £24 a month when it goes live, with your first 30 days free.
